ARTIST STATEMENT

As an artist, I explore the dynamic between people, objects, prompts, space and text within a given environment. My work focuses on sculpting performative environments to foster temporary communication between people inside these given spaces. Manipulation and interactivity of space transforms energy, creating mood and movement within. These installations offer immersive experiences that are different from everyday reality and call to explore, learn and question the history of these spaces. My inspiration for these installations comes straight from the location and the materials and objects that were left behind. From found materials, sounds, and documents, all materials are used to create visual sculptures that showcase the history of the location while simultaneously creating and giving a space a new purpose. This work is drawn from a series of artists, art movements, and performances. One artist being Kara Walker. Her piece, A Subtlety, in which she recalled the history of Brooklyn’s legendary Domino Sugar Factory. With this, Walker used material known to the factory as a huge component in her sculpture. For me, exploring these spaces is opening up a conversation on how to use or repurpose old industrial buildings. As well as the sensitivity and precautions needed when finding or handling sensitive materials such as personal files. Working in these spaces offers me as an artist to learn and explore different spaces as well as create work with different materials and mediums while creating conversations with others as they move around, engage, and explore different spaces.
